People are obviously listening to the widespread media predictions that Spanish food is going to be the “next big thing”. In fact London has been blessed with some great Spanish eateries for many years; however there are some truly remarkable newcomers that deserve a mention for taking tapas to its next level in the Big Smoke.

With it’s white furniture and distinctly groovy interiors, Battersea’s Lola Rojo has already made enough waves to earn it a short listing for Time Out’s Best Local Restaurant category in the 2007 Eating & Drinking Awards. What makes Lola Rojo so interesting is the symbiosis created between the restaurant and the deli.

There is a wide range of Spanish products on offer including olive oils, cheeses, a broad range of jamon from standard to extra reserve as well as cured meats from Leon and Recebo Iberica and regional specialities such as anis cakes from Seville – in fact, part of the philosophy of Lola Rojo is to offer a choice of food and products not readily available elsewhere in London.

On Fridays and Saturdays owners Antonio and Cristina set up shop at the front of the restaurant so diners – or shoppers - can taste and try before they buy. There’s also a well-stocked cellar including – you guessed it – some carefully chosen Sherries, as well as good choice of other Spanish wines.
